Course Description
The course covers the rise of antisemitism in Nazi Germany through the breakdown of just social order as well as throughout Christian history where Jews were persecuted and expelled in the name of Christianity. Though Anti-Judaism did not cause the Holocaust, it did contribute to it. How and why Anti-Judaism evolved into racial Antisemitism is scrutinized. The course also includes heroic and documented stories of rescue throughout Nazi occupied Europe and critiques how and why those rescuers did what they did and how they contributed to the common good—both in their own time and for the future.
We follow a seminar style format. Your questions, responses, and ideas are expected and appreciated.
• 1. Classes will consist of discussions of readings, instruction, critiques, and dialogue, both individually and in groups. Additional articles, newspaper and film clips, and documents will be read and discussed. Together, we will attend an exhibit at the at SF MOMA (no payment necessary).
During class please share with us your:
• Comments and observations—surprises, new information for you, points of disagreement, places where you want more information, etc.
• 2. As noted below there are required reading assignments that will occur periodically- these will include specific questions.
However, you need also to note the following:
• Citing quotations that strike you (and addressing why you are noting them) in the reading
• Asking questions
• Noting anything you had to look up
• Noting any footnotes that you looked up
• Include at the end one or two questions that the reading(s) raised for you. These will be due at the beginning of each class.

3. An individual/pair presentation is required. See below - you will be divided into pairs and assigned a rescuer from the rescuer textbook- you will create a 10 to 15 minute prezi or ppt presentation and discuss the background, life and heroism of the rescuer; you need to delve into the psychology of the rescuer as much as possible.
