Course Description
We make sense of life and our world through telling our story and listening to other’s stories. In this experiential course we will craft, tell and listen to personal stories of participants, as a way for them to learn to create compelling and effective narratives. We will participate in improv theater exercises, watch data-driven stories and use public data sets to conduct research on topics of interest to the participants, in order to produce several distinct personal stories all through the course. Students will learn various techniques and tools to select and present stories visually, using images, text, video and narrative. They will learn to communicate information clearly and articulate their perspectives and research-based insights. Course requires self-learning of technology and software packages such as iMovie, WeVideo, Canva, Powtoon, etc. The course is a creative one, requiring self-discipline and ability to structure your work to deliver quality stories in a timely manner. You will leave the course with a sense of community with your peers, and a portfolio of digital stories, each with a different purpose - a descriptive story, a perspective i.e. an opinion piece, and a final project based on your choice of topic and format.
The is built on a cumulative approach, as described below:
1. Phase 1 will start with improv exercises to tap into the imagination and art in addition to words, as a way for self-expression and finding your voice. The first digital story will be an introductory descriptive one.
2. Phase 2 will focus on developing skills for listening and critical thinking. Be Heard Now! by Lee Glickstein is a useful reading and we hope to have the local author visit the class to conduct an experiential workshop in public speaking. By the end of phase 2 everyone is expected to have a perspective on an issue.
3. Phase 3 is devoted to deploying the skills developed in the first two pahses of the course to craft and share our individual stories. We will use experiential exercises such as collage making, story-boarding using photos, artifacts, music, archival or publically available data, in order to craft our stories.
The course uses Pixar’s collective creativity process with daily updates on the work-in-progress and peer review. This will also be a way to practice telling and listening to each work in a hands-on manner, while creating presentations and videos that capture our stories for sharing with a larger audience. Each digital story is on topics of participant’s choice to build an individualized portfolio.
